LCHF: Day 0.5

We all have all had that moment of realization, where despite knowing we need to lose weight, the knowledge that something needs to be done finally hits home. That moment for me happened on July 1st, when I opened the website that held my anxiously awaited engagement photos.

What I had anticipated was going to be a wonderful and fun experience turned out to be depressing and frustrating instead...

I had been gradually putting on pounds, and then losing a few here and there when the notion to start a work out regime hit me, since my Freshman year of college nine years ago. In an intellectual way, I've known for a long time that I was overweight and needed to be working on losing the weight but it wasn't until those pictures did I actually understand how far I was from making anything happen. I even thought I was making progress...

I decided that something needed to change, and it needed to change now not later.

I've tried diet programs that involved counting calories and I do pretty well for about 5 days and then I'm back to my old practices. So I began my search for other options that would get me the results I craved but was less counting intensive. I talked to friends and family in search of something that worked and that I thought might work for me.

I settled on the Keto diet because of the limited counting and because it seemed like the diet that would require the least amount of change in my diet and so I thought it easier to stick with.

I began more intense research into the restrictions and suggestions given by Keto experts. I started with Everything About Keto on Reddit per a suggestion from my soon-to-be-brother-in-law. In short order I realized that the change in my current diet was going to be a lot more extensive than I had originally thought.

For whatever reason, my brain connected carbohydrates to bread and pasta and thus concluded that I could easily cut out those things. Turns out there are carbs in EVERYTHING!

So, today I went to the grocery store for the first attempt at Keto-friendly shopping. Frustrating is the best way I can explain this trip. I hadn't made a list because I didn't know what I could and could not put on the list. I picked up product after product on my normal shopping list, flipped it over, looked at the net carbs (carbs-fiber) and slowly returned it to the shelf.

So I came home with assorted meat from the deli and veggies from the produce section, plus a few things that I thought could be eating in extreme moderation while staying under 50g net carbs a day.  Needless to say my hunt for recipes and meal plans got a lot more intense as soon as my groceries were put away.

At the moment I feel totally overwhelmed with the amount of information I need to familiarize myself with before I can actually be successful with this major lifestyle change. I found pages upon pages of website with low carb recipes and equally as many websites about the keto diet/lifestyle.

I started this blog as a place to share what I find as I sort through the massive quantities of information that is at my fingertips. I am by no means a diet expert but I am interested in making a positive change in my current lifestyle.

Questions, comments, and suggestions are welcome. Thank you for reading!
